New Delhi: Lamine Yamal, the 16-year-old winger for Barcelona, has played a crucial role in advancing Spain in Euro 2024 while also successfully passing his secondary education exams. As the youngest participant in the European Championship, Yamal is excelling both academically and athletically, with his sights set on helping Spain secure their fourth Euros title.

FC Barcelona had struggled in the 2023/24 season, but Yamal has been a bright ray of sunshine irrespective of Blaugrana’s performances. Xavi has frequently brought up La Masia players for the first team, with Pedri, Gavi, and Ronald Araujo being notable names who have cemented their place in the first-team squad. Similarly, the new crop of players included the likes of Alejandro Balde, Fermin Lopez, and one of the youngest breakout stars in La Liga history, Lamine Yamal.

Lamine Yamal is still a school student, and he has already become a crucial member of Spain’s National Football Team under Luis de La Fuente. He got called up for the UEFA Euro 2024 and became the youngest player ever to set foot in the tournament history.

“It [Examination grades] said I had passed so I just closed the app”, says 16-year-old Lamine Yamal

Lamine Yamal has not only played a pivotal role in propelling Spain into the knockout stages of Euro 2024 but has also maintained his academic responsibilities. The 16-year-old Barcelona winger proudly announced that he had passed his secondary education exams.

In the 2023/24 season, Yamal made a remarkable entry into both Barcelona’s and Spain’s starting lineups, becoming the youngest player to participate in a European Championship when Spain triumphed over Croatia in their group opener earlier this month.

In an interview with the Spanish radio station, Ondo Cero, Yamal opened up about his situation regarding balancing his studies and football. He said: “I passed the exams and I have the ESO title now,“.

Despite his achievements off the field, Lamine Yamal, the 16-year-old Barcelona winger, has been instrumental in Spain’s impressive performance at Euro 2024. The team, having won all three of their group stage matches, including victories over defending champions Italy and Croatia, now stands as one of the tournament favourites.

He said: “The last grades I’ve seen? If I’m honest, I saw them on my phone and it said I had passed so I just closed the app, called my mum, and told her.

Spain faces Georgia in the Round of 16 fixture and may go on to face the hosts, Germany, in the quarter-finals. He added:

Everything we’ve done in the group stage will be worthless if they knock us out on Sunday. We’ve already played against them (in the qualifiers), but we know it won’t be the same game,“.

At just 16 years old, playing for a prestigious club like FC Barcelona and representing your country is a dream come true. However, Yamal’s dedication and maturity on the field have already secured his place in football history, all while diligently managing his schoolwork, even during his time in Germany.

As Spain pursues a record fourth Euros title, Yamal will be rooting for them to go all the way, especially since his 17th birthday falls on the eve of the final (July 14).
