Aitana Bonmatí leaves her future at Barça up in the air and sets off alarm bells

Aitana Bonmatí gave an interview to ‘France Football’ after being awarded her second Ballon d’Or. The FC Barcelona star was blunt in criticising the level of the Spanish women’s league and left her continuity in the blue and red team up in the air, with which she has just renewed until 2028.

I would love for the (Spanish) league to be more competitive, although I don’t think that is an excuse to stop progressing individually and as a team,” the Catalan player began by saying about the league competition.

“At Barça we have the feeling that things are moving forward, that they are betting on us. We continue to perform, filling the stadiums. The problem is that when we look at the league it is the opposite. We have the feeling that we are stagnating. And we have been asking for changes for years that have not come”

Later, she regretted that Spanish women’s football, which reached the top in August 2023 by lifting the World Cup, has not taken sufficient advantage of the ‘hype’ of that success. “In other countries like England, after the Euro Cup (2022), there was a media boom that we have not been able to take advantage of here. Hopefully we can change that,” she said.

Her future at Barça

Regarding her future and after having rejected an offer from Chelsea, Bonmatí made it clear that, although she remains very committed to Barça, she does not rule out “the possibility of playing outside of Spain one day.” “My priority has always been Barça, that’s why I renewed (until 2028)…”

“I don’t know if I’ll be a one-club woman. I always try to focus on the present”

“I don’t think I can project myself five, six or seven years from now. I don’t know what will happen, nobody knows,” acknowledged Aitana, whose statements surely set off alarm bells in Barcelona.
