Alaves do Barcelona a favor ahead of Real Sociedad clash

Barcelona don’t want to be playing for second place but that’s the situation Xavi’s side find themselves in ahead of the final weeks of the season.

The Catalans are currently third but can regain second spot on Monday night against Real Sociedad after Alaves did Xavi’s men a favor on Friday night.

A 99th minute equaliser from Jon Guridi ensured Luis Garcia’s side drew 2-2 with Girona in a fun game at Mendizorroza.

Eric Garcia had opened the scoring with his fourth goal of the season before Alaves hit back. Yangel Herrera then put the visitors in front again before they were denied at the death.

The point leaves Girona just two ahead of Barcelona, having played a game more, with three matches now left for Michel’s side.

A win over La Real on Monday will propel Barca back into second place and should provide some cheer after a tough few weeks.

It also makes an impact financially. RAC1 have estimated the difference between finishing second or third is around €7 million in terms of television rights.

There’s also the small matter of the Spanish Super Cup which also offers the winners €2m in prize money as well as appearances fees.
