Araujo, dropped from Uruguay squad due to injury overload

Ronald Araujo (25 years old) will be heading back to Barcelona earlier than expected. The Uruguayan defender flew to Bilbao last Monday to join the Uruguayan team for their upcoming friendlies against Euskadi in San Mamés and Ivory Coast in France, but unfortunately, he won’t be playing any minutes.

Marcelo Bielsa, the national team coach, has already decided not to use Araujo in the match against the Basque team, and on Tuesday, Uruguay itself confirmed through their social media that Araujo won’t be traveling to Lille for the game against the recent African champions.

The defender has been released along with Matías Vecino, Facundo Torres, Rodrigo Zalazar, and Bruno Méndez, who all started in the first friendly match. The Uruguayan team mentioned that Araujo will return to Barcelona early due to a thigh overload. It’s not a serious issue, but the team wanted to play it safe and let him go back to Barcelona for proper recovery to prevent any further injury.

As per Jorge Giordano, the director of Uruguay‘s national team, in an interview with Minuto 1 (Carve Deportiva), Araujo participated in all training sessions with the team with the right intensity. Giordano also mentioned, “He was with us for 10 days, in 14 training sessions, which was crucial. We decided not to risk him in the national team matches even though he was fit. He’s a reliable player.”

Therefore, Araujo‘s comeback under Xavi‘s guidance will happen sooner than expected. This is good news for the team, as one of their key defenders will not have to play extra minutes before a crucial stretch of the season in the upcoming weeks.
