Aston Villa outline Barcelona intentions amid Tyrone Mings expectation

Aston Villa have reportedly confirmed their intentions to Barcelona around the permanent signing of defender Clement Lenglet.

The Villans have decided not to extend Lenglet’s stay following his season-long loan deal, with another temporary move off the cards and a purchase certainly not planned.

The Frenchman got off to a slow start in B6, at first not utilised at all in the Premier League and instead solely deployed in the UEFA Europa Conference League. That streak eventually ended as Lenglet got his chance in the English top tier come December but even then league minutes were sparse, totalling just 1,155 over the course of the season.

Lenglet may not have been as involved as hoped but his presence certainly helped Villa, giving the opportunity to rest Pau Torres ahead of key fixtures. Unai Emery is thankful for Lenglet’s efforts during the ultra-successful 2023/24 term but wants to prioritise another option ahead of next campaign.

Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo reports Villa’s decision to not re-approach Lenglet has been communicated to Barcelona ahead of the summer transfer window. Incoming head coach Hansi Flick is set to assess the situation but the current plan is to find another destination for the France international.

Tyrone Mings expectation outlined

Emery hopes Tyrone Mings can reach the levels displayed before he suffered his severe anterior cruciate ligament injury on the opening day of last season. The left-sided centre-back was a key player during Emery’s first campaign but his lengthy rehabilitation process meant no involvement during the most recent.

It will take more time and patience for Mings to regain the required match sharpness but he returned to training in April to begin that process. Pre-season will be important to establish the next steps before a hopeful return to the matchday squad. A fully-fit Mings would make it completely unnecessary for Villa to sign a new centre-half.
