Barcelona captain deserving of No. 1 status with national team says midfielder

Marc-Andre ter Stegen has finally achieved his life-long ambition of becoming the German national team’s starting goalkeeper following Manuel Neuer’s retirement.

If there were any doubts about his position in the squad, Julian Naglesmann made sure to squash them, confirming his status as ‘the new number one in goal.’

Now, Germany and Bayern Munich ace Joshua Kimmich has also come out to publicly direct his support for Ter Stegen following his long-awaited ascension in the pecking order.

Kimmich lauded his international teammate, claiming (h/t Mundo Deportivo), “He has done a brilliant job over the years. I always got the impression that he wanted to be the number 1, but if he isn’t, you have a responsibility to the team.”

Kimmich has established himself as a key player for both club and country and will soon lock horns against Barcelona in the UEFA Champions League.

Despite the rivalry between Barcelona and Bayern Munich, the German right-back recognized the significant value of Ter Stegen serving as captain for a prestigious club like the Blaugrana.

“And he – Ter Stegen – has always done it in an outstanding way. He is the captain of FC Barcelona, which is not usual for a German player. I am glad that the door to a starting position is now open for him, he deserves it,” Kimmich commented.

The 32-year-old goalkeeper recently secured his first clean sheet of the season against Real Valladolid, a match in which his contributions were relatively minimal, as the forwards dominated the action

Still, he made a vital save in the first half which prevented the perfect night from being blemished. Now, Ter Stegen will be vying to replicate his form on the international stage in the upcoming games against Hungary and the Netherlands.
