Barcelona could face potential road-block in pursuit of young German coach
Barcelona have identified a bunch of different candidates that could potentially replace Xavi as the coach of the club. The Spaniard is ready to depart the club at the end of the season, and announced his resignation earlier in January.
While the Barcelona administration are also trying to convince Xavi to stay, they had shortlisted a fair few names, including Hansi Flick, Roberto De Zerbi, Thomas Tuchel, and others.
Barcelona were also briefly linked to Julian Nagelsmann, who is considered one of the best young managers in the world.
Currently coaching the German National Team for the 2024 European Championship, Nagelsmann is not expected to continue beyond the competition and will look for a club to continue his coaching career.
And while neither party has particularly made up their mind, it seems the DFB are looking to retain his services.
Situation to be resolved pre-Euros
As quoted by Fabrizio Romano earlier today, DFB president Neuendorf spoke about their desire to stick with Nagelsmann after the Euros as well.
“We have to talk to each other and I am very confident that we will quickly reach a result,” he said.
“Nagelsmann wants to find a solution before the Euros and we will respect his wishes,” Neuendorf added optimistically.
Nagelsmann took over the Germany job after Bayern Munich sacked him in favour of Thomas Tuchel around this time last year. About half-a-year later, he became the manager for the NT, with a contract running until the European Championship.
Barcelona will face competition
It seems Nagelsmann wants to find a solution to his situation before the Euros start, and is ready to sign a pre-agreement if he is convinced by a project. The idea of a sabbatical has been ruled out.
Barça will, however, have to fend off competition should they choose to pursue him with several teams expected to be without a head coach ahead of the next season, including Liverpool, Bayern, and others.
