Transfer Rumors and News

Barcelona defender unsure about future despite Hansi Flick counting on him

With the end of last month marking the termination of several player contracts, Barcelona bid adieu to stars including Joao Cancelo and Joao Felix who arrived on loan a year ago.

Concurrently, however, the Catalan club see the return of players who left for greener pastures on loan. A total of seven such cases exist, and only Sergino Dest’s future has been finalised among them.

AS provides an update on the situation of another young star who has returned to Barcelona through contractual obligation as of July 1st – Eric Garcia.

An uncertain future

Garcia left Barcelona late in last summer’s transfer market to sign for Girona and was thus a part of the magical journey Michel’s side enjoyed last season.

The centre-back established himself as a reliable starter and was one of the backbones of the Catalan side’s defence.

Especially having qualified for the UEFA Champions League with Girona, Garcia is not clear if he does indeed wish to stay with the Blaugrana.

The Spanish outlet furthers that the former Manchester City star is left with a bitter taste after his last experience at the club and the drought for minutes he faced. At Girona, on the contrary, he is the star of the defence with the limelight on him.

The Olympic factor

Hansi Flick is said to trust Garcia and value his profile, and ideally, wishes to work with the player before taking a decision on his future.

The fundamental mismatch, however, is that the young defender will not get a chance to work with the German tactician until the season starts.

He has been called up to represent Spain at the Olympics and will thus be on international duty with the likes of Pau Cubarsi.

Flick and Barcelona, thus, must make a binding decision on his future purely based on the situation in central defence. Given the relative overstaffing, the player could well secure a permanent transfer this month.
