Barcelona jewel rejected European giants to renew until 2026 with three additional years
Earlier today, Barcelona officially announced the contract renewal of teenage midfield gem Marc Bernal until 2026.
The 17-year-old had reached an agreement with the club over the new deal a while back only and it was officially signed and announced today.
Bernal’s previous contract also ran until 2026 but the new contract sees him being handed improved terms after spending a season in the reserve team dynamics.
Bernal turned down European giants
Now, journalist Santi Ovalle has come forward with more details regarding Marc Bernal and his contract renewal.
As per the report, Bernal rejected proposals from several European giants in order to renew his contract at Barcelona.
It appears that the 17-year-old La Masia gem’s contract had a release clause worth only €6 million which clubs across Europe were willing to activate.
However, the youngster turned down all overtures so as to stay put and continue with Barcelona by penning a deal until 2026.
The report further states that Bernal’s new contract also comes with the option of extending it by an additional three years, meaning it would run until 2029 if Barça decide to exercise that clause in the future.
Bernal is held in the highest of regard at Barcelona and is seen as the future first-team pivot midfielder within the club.
The 17-year-old made a solid impression in his debut season with Barça Atletic last time out. Now, he is doing pre-season training under the orders of first-team boss Hansi Flick and is expected to be a part of the US tour.
With a number of midfielders currently sidelined with injury, Bernal could get an opportunity to make an impression on the pre-season tour to stake a claim for a berth in the senior setup when the season starts.
