Barcelona key target’s club willing to raise his salary, contract length to stop transfer

The suspense regarding the future of Nico Williams continues, even amid recent reports suggesting he has made the decision to continue at Athletic Club.

Nothing has been confirmed just yet, with the forward yet to make any final decision on his future. At least that is what Fabrizio Romano claims in his latest update.

The Italian journalist also claims that Athletic Club have an interesting proposal to Nico, in their bid to keep hold of the star forward.

Athletic Club’s proposal to Nico

As per Romano, Athletic Club, last week, proposed to reward Nico Williams in case he continues at the club next season.

The Basque outfit offered to improve Nico’s contract if he decided to continue at the club, despite the fact that the player had renewed his contract at the end of 2023.

Athletic Club promised to increase Nico’s salary in his new deal, which will be longer in duration, in comparison to the current one.

Nico’s current contract at Athletic Club expires in 2027. But what makes him such an appealing target for Barcelona is the €58 million release clause.

Athletic Club, though, also offered to discuss the terms of the release clause in his new deal, most likely with the intention of increasing it further in order to fend off potential suitors.

Barcelona, in particular, cannot afford Nico to sign a new deal at Athletic Club, knowing any increase in his release clause could effectively make him unaffordable next summer.

Nevertheless, Nico has yet to respond to any proposals so far, including those from his parent club. Romano does, however, suggest that a final decision could ‘come anytime’ now, much to the suspense of Barcelona, Athletic Club and PSG.
