Barcelona manager hoping for star midfielder to avoid surgery

The prolonged absence of Frenkie de Jong has been quite the blow for Barcelona in these early parts of the campaign.

Although the club have enjoyed a remarkable start to the new season, they are devoid of reliable options in midfield, especially following the injury of Marc Bernal.

Hansi Flick, therefore, is desperately awaiting the return of de Jong, who has been out of action since picking up an injury against Real Madrid on April 21.

De Jong was expected to take part in Euro 2024 with the Netherlands, but he could not feature in a single game. In recent weeks, de Jong’s ankle problem has complicated further, leading many to advise him to undergo surgery.

A recent report from Mundo Deportivo has offered an update on de Jong’s fitness, suggesting the player is facing immense pressure to make a final decision on his recovery process.

The report adds that de Jong must now make a decision between continuing his conservative treatment or opting for surgery.

Hansi Flick, for his part, is hoping that de Jong won’t have surgery, as that would mean a longer waiting period for the Dutchman’s return.

Flick’s concerns are warranted given the fact that Barcelona lack the services of a reliable defensive midfielder, following the injury of Bernal.

Not to mention, Barcelona had offloaded Oriol Romeu, Ilkay Gundogan and Sergi Roberto in the summer. Flick, therefore, has to choose between Marc Casado and Eric Garcia for the number six position.

Casado produced a composed performance in Barcelona’s recent win over Real Valladolid, but the Spaniard could be tested in the upcoming matches.

Garcia, on the other hand, is not a natural defensive midfielder. The return of de Jong, therefore is the need of the hour in Barcelona.

There is hope the midfielder may return to action after the international break, but that would depend on whether or not the player can get his discomfort behind him.
