Barcelona midfielder’s future mired in uncertainty ahead of summer window

With the summer transfer window just around the corner, multiple Barcelona players are facing an uncertain future at Camp Nou.

One of them could be Ilkay Gundogan, who was arguably one of Barcelona’s most important players in the season gone by.

While many expected Gundogan to play a key role in Hansi Flick’s system next season, recent reports paint a completely different picture.

Uncertainty over Gundogan’s future

According to The Athletic, there is uncertainty brewing over the future of Ilkay Gundogan and there is even a possibility he could leave in the summer.

Barcelona ideally do not want to sell Gundogan, but he is not considered untouchable. This is primarily because Barça are yet to define a proper role for the midfielder next season.

As per the report, it is still unclear how Gundogan will be utilised by new coach Hansi Flick next season.

With the German tactician likely to introduce a 4-2-3-1 formation, there could be one less midfield spot up for grabs. In that context, Gundogan might not get to play in the attacking midfield position, especially if Pedri is fit and available.

Barcelona’s hunt for a number six

The report adds that the outcome of Barcelona’s quest for a new holding midfielder could go a long way in determining Gundogan’s future.

The Catalans are desperate for a new number six, with Joshua Kimmich still emerging as a potential option.

If Barcelona are able to sign a holding midfielder, Gundogan will be allowed to operate in a more attacking position. However, if not, the German may have to settle for a deeper role once again.

Keeping that in mind, Gundogan’s exit has not been completely ruled out and Barcelona might consider selling him if they receive a good offer for the former Man City superstar.
