Barcelona not working on free agent signings outside transfer window – report
After one of their quietest transfer windows in recent memory, Barcelona ended up making just two signings — Dani Olmo and Pau Víctor — and struggled once again to register all of their contracts within La Liga’s salary cap rules, but that still hasn’t stopped the rumor mill from creating more news about the Catalans bringing in new players.
The transfer window closed on Friday but La Liga clubs are still allowed to sign free agents at any time, as long as they have enough salary cap to register those players. Barça may create space if they finally come to an agreement with Nike on a new kit sponsorship deal, with negotiations going on for several months now.
The cash injection from a potential signing bonus in the Nike deal would reportedly allow the club to fix all of their current registration issues — the long-term injuries to Ronald Araujo and Andreas Christensen are the only reason Iñigo Martínez and Dani Olmo have been registered — and have some cap space left to bring in a free agent if needed.
With all the injuries at center-back and midfield the Catalans have been linked with the likes of Mats Hummels, Mario Hermoso and Adrien Rabiot, who are still free agents and are waiting for the right opportunity to join a new club this season.
But according to Fabrizio Romano, the Blaugrana don’t have any plans to bring in a free agent.
“It’s been reported that Barcelona are waiting on their deal with Nike to be signed and are then looking at some free transfer signings outside of the window.
“However, I’m not aware of talks with any free agents in this moment. I don’t know where these reports have come from but it’s completely quiet at Barca at the moment. I can guarantee that no negotiations are taking place now.”

Barça manager Hansi Flick has been clear about his appreciation for La Masia talents, and the coach won’t hesitate to use youngsters instead of spending a significant amount on older players during a financial crisis. It’s the reason why he reportedly blocked a move for N’Golo Kanté, and he clearly has the same attitude regarding free agents.
