Barcelona plan to extend 20-year-old future captain’s contract – Romano

Barcelona fans finally got to see key midfielder Gavi make his much-awaited return to group training today.

The 20-year-old did parts of today’s sessions with the entire squad, making a comeback after ten months on the sidelines due to an ACL injury.

While it was suggested that he could be cleared for action in 15 days, Barça are erring on the side of caution and plan on integrating him back into the team after the international break next month.

A contract extension on the cards

Now, it appears that Barcelona intend to celebrate Gavi’s long-awaited return from injury with a new contract.

Indeed, according to Fabrizio Romano, the Blaugrana are already planning to extend the 20-year-old midfield star’s contract.

Gavi, who is already seen as a future captain at the club, has a contract that runs until 2026. The 20-year-old penned the deal two years ago in 2022 and is shielded by a €1 billion release clause.

Come next summer, the La Masia sensation would enter the final year of his current deal, and naturally, Barcelona want to avoid such a scenario with one of the core members of their team.

As such, the plan is for the Catalans to extend Gavi’s contract as well as that of Pedri, with whom negotiations are already underway.

Apart from Gavi and Pedri, two other stars, Ronald Araujo and Frenkie de Jong, also see their contracts run out in 2026. And Barcelona are working to tie down the two captains to longer deals as well.
