Barcelona prodigy reaches agreement in principle with Chelsea over contract until 2030
Barcelona academy prodigy Marc Guiu is edging closer and closer to an exit from the club as a transfer to Chelsea is now very much completed.
Indeed, the 18-year-old La Masia centre-forward will be leaving the Catalan giants for Chelsea, who are activating his €6 million release clause.
Barça, for their part, tried to convince the teenage Spaniard to continue by offering a new contract, but it was not to be.
Agreement in principle
Now, David Ornstein of The Athletic reports that Chelsea have reached an agreement in principle with Marc Guiu over his transfer from Barcelona.
The 18-year-old will be signing a long-term contract with the Blues that will run until the summer of 2030, with the details finalised.
Chelsea will now activate the €6 million release clause in Guiu’s current contract with Barcelona and then proceed to schedule a medical for the striker before the move is made official.
As has been previously reported, Guiu was offered a deal worth around €2 million per year plus easily achievable bonuses at Barcelona, but Chelsea presented him with a proposal that was close to triple that amount.
Guiu joined La Masia in 2013 and has progressed steadily through the ranks. He made his senior debut last season against Athletic Club, even scoring in that game.
However, the striker had concerns about continuing at Barcelona as he felt first-team opportunities would be limited due to the presence of Robert Lewandowski, Ferran Torres, and possibly Vitor Roque if he stays.
That, coupled with Chelsea’s more lucrative contract offer, have convinced Guiu to make the jump and he will now ink a six-year deal until 2030 at Stamford Bridge.
Barcelona are losing a homegrown talent but there are plenty of reasons for them to not be worried about seeing the 18-year-old leave.
