Barcelona receive boost as Athletic Club close in on potential Nico Williams replacement

In recent days, Barcelona have made significant strides in their bid to sign top target Nico Williams.

The club are likely to hold further talks with the player and the club in the coming weeks, with many expecting the Spanish international to become the club’s first major signing this summer.

While Athletic Club have appeared reluctant to offload Nico, the club are actively looking for a replacement, should the forward leave the club.

Athletic Club closing in on Robert Navarro

To that end, a recent report from SPORT suggests Athletic Club are close to finalising a deal to sign Robert Navarro.

The 22-year-old winger is currently plying his trade for Real Sociedad. But his contract expires in 2025 and the player is unlikely to extend his contract.

Athletic Club are more than likely to reach an agreement with Navarro, tabling a deal that could see him move to Basque in the summer of 2025.

Given the similar playstyles, many expect Navarro to become the potential replacement for Nico Williams, who is more than likely to leave the club by 2025.

Interestingly, Athletic Club’s initial plan was to keep hold of Nico until 2025. However, with Barcelona pushing for a move this summer, Nico’s departure may force the club to expedite the talks with Navarro.

Given his contract situation at Real Sociedad, the 22-year-old is unlikely to cost a fortune this summer.

Moreover, Athletic Club could rake in a handsome amount, should they end up selling Nico this summer, so funding a move for Navarro will not be an issue.

However, these are still early days and given Athletic Club’s resilience in keeping hold of Nico, we may have to wait out a few more days, if not weeks, to know the fate of this transfer saga.
