Barcelona teenage gem rejected two renewal offers to secure Premier League move
Barcelona made a determined effort to keep their young forward, Marc Guiu, as revealed by transfer market specialist Fabrizio Romano.
The journalist reports that the club offered Guiu a significantly improved salary and a higher release clause, presenting more than two proposals over the past few months to convince him to stay.
However, despite their best efforts, Guiu had already made up his mind to join Chelsea.
Reports indicate that the Premier League club activated his €6 million release clause and following a verbal agreement, the young forward is set to sign a contract with Chelsea that will keep him at the club until 2030.
What was Barcelona’s offer to Guiu?
As reported before, Barcelona’s offer to Guiu included a deal worth around €2 million per year, along with easily attainable bonuses.
However, Chelsea came forward with a proposal that nearly tripled Barcelona’s offer, making it an irresistible option for the young forward.
Interestingly, this wasn’t the only attempt Barcelona made to retain Guiu. They put forward more than two offers, but Chelsea’s lucrative proposal ultimately won him over.
Potential reasons for Guiu’s departure
The decision to leave Barcelona likely stemmed from the intense competition within the team.
With an established star like Robert Lewandowski and deputy Vitor Roque competing for the same position, Guiu’s opportunities to play under coach Hansi Flick were limited.
Faced with the prospect of limited game time, Guiu might have been utilized across both the youth and senior teams at Barcelona. However, he was likely seeking a more significant role, one that Chelsea was ready to provide.
This move to Chelsea represents a big step for Guiu, offering him the chance to develop his career in a new and competitive environment.
Barcelona’s willingness to offer Guiu improved terms and multiple proposals shows their desire to invest in his future. However, the allure of Chelsea’s offer and the opportunity for greater playing time proved too strong for Guiu to resist.
