Barcelona vs Brest predictions

All of a sudden, Barcelona are not sitting quite so comfortably at the summit of the La Liga standings.

Hansi Flick’s side came flying out of the blocks this term and they remain in top spot after 14 rounds of fixtures. But a 1-0 defeat by Real Sociedad before the international break and a 2-2 draw with Celta Vigo at the weekend have opened the door to Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid.

Diego Simeone’s side are now within five points of Barcelona, while Madrid have the chance to go a point behind their arch-rivals by winning their game in hand against Valencia. The title race is far from done and dusted over in Spain.

Those five dropped points have no direct effect on Barcelona’s Champions League campaign, but the team’s confidence has no doubt taken a hit in recent weeks.

Barca remain well positioned in Europe. At the midway point of the league phase, they are sixth in the 36-team table. A top-eight finish is required to qualify directly for the round of 16.

Barcelona got off to the worst possible start, going down 2-1 to Monaco on matchday one. But they have been relentless since then, thumping Young Boys 5-0, demolishing Bayern Munich 4-1 and beating Red Star Belgrade 5-2. A return of 15 goals in four games makes Flick’s men the competition’s highest-scorers at this stage.

However, Barcelona’s recent results in La Liga mean they cannot take anything for granted. Indeed, there is still plenty of work for the Catalan club to do if they are to finish in the top eight.

Upcoming trips to Borussia Dortmund and Benfica will not be easy, while a home game against Atalanta has ‘potential banana skin’ written all over it.

Not that Barca can afford to look beyond Tuesday’s tussle with Brest, one of the surprise packages of this Champions League campaign.

Brest are fourth in the standings right now, having accumulated 10 points from the first 12 on offer. Only league leaders Liverpool have amassed more.

The Ligue 1 team are not doing particularly well domestically, but they seem to be saving their best form for continental competition. Barcelona should be wary of that.

Barcelona vs Brest betting tips

Barcelona are strong favourites to win on Tuesday, but Brest have a good record in the Champions League.

Real Madrid to win and BTTS

It is fair to say that not even the most ardent Brest fan could have imagined their team being in the top four halfway through the league phase.

But while we should not take anything away from the French outfit, it is worth noting that the fixture list has been reasonably kind up to now.

A 1-1 draw with Bayer Leverkusen was a highly creditable result, but Brest’s wins came against Sturm Graz, Red Bull Salzburg and Sparta Prague.

You can only beat what is in front of you, of course, but Barcelona should ultimately have too much for their upcoming opponents provided they play to their potential.

Flick’s side have kept only one clean sheet in their last seven games, though, so Brest should have some joy in front of goal.

Under 1.5 goals in the first half

Barcelona have made fast starts in their last three Champions League games, scoring at least twice in the first half of each of them.

We expect a tighter opening 45 minutes this time around. For one, Brest will focus on making life difficult for their hosts by sitting deep and packing men behind the ball.

Barcelona have the quality to break down low blocks and it is not exactly a novel challenge for a team which regularly faces such tactics in La Liga.

But Flick’s charges have not been quite as effective going forward of late, so Brest should have some initial success in keeping the score down from minutes one to 45.

At odds close to evens, this would be an astute second pick.

Raphinha to score any time

Ansu Fati, Lamine Yamal, Eric Garcia, Marc-Andre ter Stegen, Marc Bernal, Andreas Christensen and Ronald Araujo are all missing for Barcelona through injury.

In addition, Ferran Torres is a doubt with a hamstring issue and Gavi is still working his way back to full fitness.

That is quite the list of absentees and another reason why Barcelona might not be at their free-flowing best in this one.

Raphinha is one of the players they will look to for inspiration in the final third. The Brazilian, who has scored eight goals so far, is enjoying a fine season under Flick.

Brest will have to keep a close eye on the former Leeds United man, but even that might not be enough to keep his name off the scoresheet.
