Barcelona’s ‘extreme conditions’ to keep hold of 32-year-old veteran – report
As we approach the end of the month, the future of Sergi Roberto has come under focus, with Barcelona still yet to hand him a renewal.
Hansi Flick has recently closed the door on Roberto’s return by refusing to brand him as a Barcelona player under the current conditions – something that has hurt the Spaniard for obvious reasons.
Deco to meet Roberto soon
That said, there is still a minuscule possibility Sergi Roberto could continue at Barcelona and renew his contract.
According to Diario AS, Barcelona sporting director Deco is set to meet Roberto’s agents this week. He also informed them that the Spaniard is still a part of the club’s plans going forward.
However, if Roberto is to continue in Barcelona, he must accept extreme conditions. That means the veteran midfielder may have to settle for a pay cut.
Barcelona are indeed offering Roberto a ‘low-level’ contract. However, the Catalans are only in a position to register the midfielder if they have enough salary margin.
Considering the fact that Barcelona are actively trying to bring in Nico Williams and Dani Olmo, creating the salary margin could prove to be tricky.
Not to mention, Barça are yet to register Inigo Martinez and some other key players. The club, therefore, have some priorities to sort out before they can make a move for Sergi Roberto.
Roberto considering other options
As Barcelona try their best to come up with a renewal offer for Roberto, the player could be tempted to consider other offers as well.
The report notes that Roberto has no shortage of suitors. The likes of Aston Villa, Ajax and West Ham have expressed a desire to sign the Spaniard.
Although Roberto has also been courted by several La Liga clubs, the player is more interested in moving abroad.
