Barcelona’s Financial Win: Former defender’s transfer set to bring in €1.3 million
Barcelona are poised to earn €1.3 million from the upcoming transfer of their former defender, Jorge Cuenca, who is set to join Premier League team Fulham from Villarreal for €6.5 million.
Cuenca’s journey with Barcelona began in 2017 when he joined the club’s reserve team. Despite his time with the reserves, Cuenca struggled to make a significant impact on the first team.
As a result, in 2020, he was transferred to Villarreal. The deal was valued at around €2.5 million with an additional €4 million based on future performance-related variables.
As part of the transfer agreement, Barcelona retained a 20% stake in any future sale of Cuenca. After moving to Villarreal, Cuenca was immediately loaned out to Almeria.
Barcelona have been gaining a lot recently
In recent years, Barcelona have adopted a new strategy to benefit from player transfers. Instead of only focusing on immediate gains, the club has started to reserve a percentage of future sales in its agreements.
This approach is beginning to pay off. For example, Chadi Riad’s transfer to Crystal Palace this summer involved nearly €9 million, with Barcelona reserving 50% of any future sale when Riad was transferred from Betis.
Barcelona are also anticipating additional funds from another future transfer. Next summer, the club could receive up to €7 million from the sale of Jean Clair Todibo to Juventus.
There is more work to do
Currently, Barcelona are focused on raising €40 million from the sale of Barça Studios, which is crucial for the club to comply with the 1:1 financial rule allowing them to participate in the transfer market.
Despite these financial efforts, the club continues to benefit from its strategy of retaining percentages in future sales.
The most recent financial boost for Barcelona comes from Cuenca’s transfer to Fulham. With Villarreal closing the deal for €6.5 million, Barcelona are set to receive €1.3 million from this transaction.
This unexpected financial gain will help the club balance its books and support its ongoing financial strategy.
