Barcelona’s Ilkay Gundogan opens up on fatigue fears as he prepares for Spain clash at Euro 2024

Ilkay Gundogan has played down talk of burnout as he prepares to make his 65th appearance of a busy season on Friday for Germany against Spain.

The Germany midfielder is currently on target to match Pedri’s brutal record from the 2020-21 season, prompting speculation Barca are concerned about his workload.

However, Gundogan says he knows how to look after himself even though he did feel fatigued at the end of the domestic season in Spain.

“I always try to give my best in everything I do. It has been a very demanding season, but I am not complaining. In experienced football you learn to take care of yourself, to know where your limits are and above all to have a strong mentality in good and bad times,” he told Mundo Deportivo.

“For me, playing football is a privilege that I enjoy every day and that state of mind helps me to maintain the best possible level.

“At the end of the club season I felt really a bit tired. In our test matches before the Euros I didn’t play more than 90 minutes and I was substituted a little earlier. So the intensity during these weeks was no longer as high and just in time for our first match against Scotland I felt really good again.”

Gundogan will be hoping to play a few more games at Euro 2024. Germany will progress to a semi-final against either Portugal or France if they can beat Spain on Friday.
