Barcelona’s Marc Guiu linked with a move to Chelsea

The last images of Marc Guiu in a Barcelona jersey could be in the heartbreaking loss suffered by Barcelona Atletic in their playoff final loss to Cordoba on Sunday.

Reports emerged during the match linking the 18-year-old striker with a move to Premier League side, Chelsea.

Chelsea is reportedly set to pay Giui’s six million euro release clause. The Catalan side had been working on a contract renewal with the player but it seems evident the offer from Chelsea is too good to pass up and an offer that Barcelona is unable to match.

In addition to Chelsea’s economic offer, Giui sees a path to the first team as nearly impossible with Robert Lewandowski and Vitor Roque in the side. Then there’s Ferran Torres who could also play in the middle of the attack if needed.

Diario Sport’s Toni Juanmarti reports that Barcelona is unaware of the interest of Chelsea and is still awaiting an answer on their latest proposal. At the same time, no decision has been made by Guiu as there is a meeting between both sides expected to happen.

Should Guiu join Chelsea, the plan from the Blues is to loan him out to Strasbourg.

Guiu made his debut with the Barcelona last season where he came in during the second half of a scoreless game between the Catalans and Athletic Bilbao. Less than a minute on the pitch, Guiu scored his first senior goal to give Barcelona the win.

He was in and out of the first team, playing the majority of the second half of the season with Barcelona Atletic, helping them in their pursuit of promotion, which ultimately fell shirt.

Former Barcelona manager Xavi Hernandez game Guiu his debut and was a big proponent of his. His dismissal must have had an effect on Guiu in terms of how much playing time he was going to get next season under Hansi Flick.

Again, while a decision has reportedly not been made, Barcelona cannot match Chelsea’s offer meaning, at this point, it’s more likely than not that Guiu will be a Chelsea player, on the books at least, come next season.
