Bayern Munich director sees Barcelona target as the future club captain

As has already been reported, Barcelona are eyeing a move for Bayern Munich and Germany midfielder Joshua Kimmich in the summer of 2025.

The 29-year-old midfield ace has entered the final year of his contract with the Bavarian giants and could be available for free next summer if he does not sign a renewal.

As such, Barça, who have been long-time admirers of Kimmich, are watching closely with the possibility of signing him on a free transfer looming.

Bayern Munich not willing to give up

However, Bayern Munich have no intentions of letting Kimmich go without a fight, with sporting director Max Eberl insisting that the midfielder is seen as the face of the project and a future captain at the club.

“We need Joshua Kimmich to be a face of the project,” Eberl told BR24, as quoted by Fabrizio Romano.

“His performances, willingness, heart… he is predestined for that. He should be the captain of Bayern Munich of the future.”

However, Eberl insisted that Bayern Munich still have to get the midfielder to sign a new contract, remarking:

“But first we have to extend the contract!”

Reports have suggested that Kimmich would be willing to join Barcelona, but the midfielder himself stated recently that he is open to signing a new contract with Bayern Munich.

“I’m available to discuss with the club,” Kimmich said about his contract situation.

“It’s always nice to feel the support from the club, and I’m just enjoying the moment. It’s important to win games,” he added.

With Bayern Munich keen on retaining Kimmich and the player himself not ruling out his continuity, it remains to be seen if Barcelona can convince him to make the switch in the summer.
