Dutch legend Ruud Gullit takes aim at Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong
Dutch legend Ruud Gullit has been talking about Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong and has been pretty critical about his performances.
De Jong is currently with the Netherlands squad preparing for Euro 2024, although he has admitted he’s still struggling with an ankle injury.
Gullit says De Jong doesn’t do enough for the team and feels he needs to give more on the pitch.
“I’m going to say something about Frenkie. I started at Feyenoord playing as a right winger. Then Johan Cruyff told me: ‘Ruud, you have to improve the game of your teammates.’ Do you know why he said that? Because when you improve your teammates’ game, you play well! Does Frenkie do that? No!,” he told the Rondo programme on Ziggo Sport.
“I often hear people say, if Frenkie plays, then we start playing football. Based on what?! Look, I find him a fantastic player, I saw him vs Germany, incredible. But I find it too little, too less!
“If you look at Frenkie de Jong during the last World Cup, he was like a ghost! He needs to take matters in his own hands.”
Certainly some strong words for De Jong who will be one of the Dutch team’s key players provided he can return from injury in time for the tournament.
