Ex-Barcelona director compares loanee’s situation to Vinicius Jr. – ‘Remember his first years at Madrid’

Vitor Roque endured a difficult six months at FC Barcelona after arriving at the club from Athletico Paranaense in January.

Having not featured under former manager Xavi Hernandez and after failing to win over Hansi Flick either, the 19-year-old joined Real Betis on loan, where he is playing regularly and going through a good moment.

Recently, Barcelona sporting director Deco spoke out in support of the young Brazilian, saying that he had been overly criticised and backing his potential.

Now, Jordi Cruyff, the former sports director of Barça, has also backed Vitor Roque to come good, citing the example of Real Madrid superstar Vinicius Jr. and how he struggled in his early years in Spain before becoming a differential player.

“I’ve said it before very subtly, being a coach here is very complicated. You have to be patient, especially when you start a new project, when a new boy comes from abroad,” said Cruyff.

“I always remember Vinicius’ first years at Madrid. This happens in Barcelona and maybe there wouldn’t be so much patience. Madrid had it and in the end, they have a player who makes a difference,” he added.

Further citing the example of Barcelona captain Raphinha and how he has grown past the criticism he faced in his first two seasons at the club, Cruyff remarked:

“Sometimes it’s a necessary thing, patience. Look at Raphinha in his first two years, when people criticised him a lot and look at what he is doing now. When it’s a young player, who comes from another continent, you have to be even more patient.”

Vitor Roque has already scored five goals early in his spell at Real Betis showing signs of his immense potential despite making a sluggish start.

The Verdiblancos have the option to extend his loan stint for another season and even sign him permanently. However, if he keeps developing, Barcelona would likely want him back in their ranks once the current loan spell comes to an end.
