FC Barcelona were ready to sell Robert Lewandowski before Hansi Flick arrived — now what happens?

Robert Lewandowski did not have a great season last year, to the point where FC Barcelona were considering selling him. Reports out of Spain (via our sister site Barca Blaugranes) indicate that the former Bayern Munich striker was on Xavi’s sell list, at least until the latter got fired.

Now a new coach is at the helm, and he’s one that Robert Lewandowski is familiar with. Hansi Flick was in charge of Bayern Munich from 2019 to 2021, during which time he coached the team to a sextuple. Lewandowski arguably reached his greatest personal milestones playing under Flick, being robbed of the Ballon d’or in 2020 (which everyone agrees he should have won) and breaking Gerd Müller’s legendary scoring record in Flick’s second season.

So it’s no surprise that the striker is staying put for now.

Barcelona will be hoping that Flick can unlock the same Lewandowski who was arguably the best player in the world back in 2020/21. While age and circumstances have brought both player and coach down low, there’s still enough talent on that Barca team to replicate a fraction of what Bayern Munich achieved in those magnificent years.

Football fans will certainly be watching with great interest.
