Hansi Flick’s squad for the FC Barcelona vs Athletic Club match

FC Barcelona continues its journey in LaLiga 2024/25 this Saturday, August 24 against the always difficult Athletic Club de Bilbao. The match, which will take place at the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys, will be the official debut of the Barça squad in front of its fans. In Montjuïc, the team led by Hansi Flick will seek to maintain the good feelings left in the duel of the first day against Valencia, where they managed to turn the score around in a show of character and forcefulness and took the first three points of the tournament.

For this match, Hansi Flick has announced a squad that includes (23) players. The new addition to the list is Dani Olmo, who has been called up for the match against Athletica despite not being registered in LaLiga yet. The club is still working on formulas to carry out his registration and they will have the opportunity to register him until minutes before the referee’s initial whistle, so the intrigue will continue until the last minute.

Fortunately, the Catalan side have managed to find the means to register Dani Olmo at the last minute, who after missing the league opener at Mestalla, will wear the blaugrana shirt officially for the first time since his arrival on 9 August. The player from Egar will almost certainly be part of the match, although it is unknown whether he will start or come off the bench.

With the absences of Clément Lenglet, Ilkay Gündogan, Vitor Roque and Mika Faye, whose departures from the club are confirmed, Hansi Flick has had to draw on the youth team to complete the list for the match against the Bilbao team. Players such as Ander Astralaga, Héctor Fort, Gerard Martín, Sergi Domínguez and Marc Bernal are back in the squad, with the latter aiming to start from the start. Andreas Christensen also dropped out of the squad after joining Ronald Araújo, Frenkie de Jong, Gavi and Ansu Fati in the Blaugrana infirmary

A ‘revolutionised’ midfield

Barça’s midfield will be modified in the match against the squad managed by Ernesto Valverde. The departure of Ilkay Gündogan represents a hard ‘blow’ for Flick, who loses one of his best players in the position. However, the presence of a fully recovered Pedri will serve to cover the absence of the German, with the Tenerife native aiming for the starting line-up to be in charge of distributing the play in the final third.

For his part, it remains to be seen whether Dani Olmo will finally be able to participate in the match. The registration of the player from Egar will be a question mark until the last moment, since the offices of the Spotify Camp Nou continue to work on finding solutions to obtain his registration and make him available to the Blaugrana coach. Fermín López will be part of the game, having returned to training this week and is presented as a luxury reinforcement for the midfield.
