How Barcelona made €40 million out of just 193 minutes of play
In a transfer market marked by financial pragmatism, FC Barcelona appear to have skillfully navigated the sale of five players who contributed a combined total of just 193 minutes on the pitch.
Remarkably, the club has managed to secure €40 million from these transfers, which is quite impressive considering their limited impact and importance in Barcelona’s first-team plans.
They were all indeed part of Barcelona’s mass exodus this summer, with eleven players departing, including the high-profile exits of Joao Felix and Joao Cancelo, who returned to their parent clubs after loan spells.
Despite these exits, the club’s incoming transfers have been limited, with only Pau Victor from Girona and Dani Olmo, who is still awaiting La Liga registration, joining the squad.
Barcelona made €40 million from 5 players
The five players who have contributed to this unexpected financial windfall include Chadi Riad, Estanis Pedrola, Marc Guiu, Mika Faye, and Julian Araujo.
Collectively, they played a mere 193 minutes for Barcelona’s first team, yet their transfers have proven lucrative.
Chadi Riad, who featured for just one minute in a league match against Osasuna last season, was sold to Crystal Palace, netting Barcelona €9 million.
This includes €6 million in capital gains and €3 million in fixed payments. Julian Araujo, who spent last season on loan at Las Palmas without making a first-team appearance, moved to Bournemouth for €10 million.
Marc Guiu, who played the most minutes among the five with 182 minutes spread over seven games, joined Chelsea, bringing in another €6 million.
Estanis Pedrola, who had only ten minutes of first-team action, saw his loan club Sampdoria exercise their purchase option, earning Barcelona €3 million.
Lastly, the most lucrative deal is expected to be that of Mika Faye, who is set to join Rennes for €12 million, pending official confirmation.
