‘I think it was a red card’ – Spain boss discusses Kroos’ challenge on Pedri

Spain boss Luis de la Fuente says he thought Toni Kroos should have been sent off for his challenge on Pedri in their Euro 2024 clash.

Pedri had to go off in the opening minutes of the quarter-final tie after being on the receiving end of a hefty tackle by the Real Madrid man.

Kroos was not even booked for the tackle but De la Fuente felt he could have been handed his marching orders.

“Pedri was in pain. I think it was a red card. Whether he’s on the pitch or off, he’s going to keep contributing,” he told reporters.

Spain went on to win 2-1 to dump out the tournament hosts and book a spot in the last four, leaving De la Fuente beaming with pride.

“Today was one of those matches that wins fans over. Commitment and teamwork help you achieve things. They will go down in history, if they haven’t already,” he added.

“There is nothing more proud than representing the country and having the fans support you.

“These players are an example of values for the country. The emotion is contagious. I still don’t know what we will do, but we will always hold our heads high and leave Spain in the place it deserves.”

Spain play again on Tuesday but will surely have to do so without Pedri who is not expected to play again at Euro 2024.
