Javier Tebas offers Barcelona hope of making ‘important signings’ this summer

La Liga president Javier Tebas seems optimistic that Barcelona can make “important signings” this summer as the club are linked with a host of players including Nico Williams.

Barcelona are hoping to return to the 1:1 rule this summer but are still waiting to find out if that will be possible.

Tebas says things are looking much better for Barcelona on the financial front and highlights just how much the wage bill has been cut in recent years.

“This year, of all the last few years, is the easiest for them. Barcelona knows what they have to do to bring in players, they know financial fair play, they have a good command of it.

“They are coming out of their complicated financial situation and we will see if they can resolve those few issues they have in order to add the important signings they are hoping for.

“There is one essential fact. Three years ago Barcelona had a first team wage bill of 650 million euros, today it is 450 million, 250 million less, something that is more manageable for a team like Barcelona.

“It is at the level of Real Madrid in terms of wage bill, but Madrid has done its homework well for many years and that is why it can sign players.”

Barcelona’s top transfer target seems to be Nico Williams. The Athletic Club star has a release clause worth around €55 million in his contract and president Joan Laporta is said to be eager to do all he can to activate it this summer.
