Joan Laporta accused of ‘deceiving’ Barcelona fans over Nico Williams and urged to call election

Victor Font has urged Barcelona president Joan Laporta to bring forward elections from 2026 to next summer in a very critical speech about the current situation at the club.

The former presidential candidate has made it crystal clear how unhappy he is with the situation at the club and is eager for change.

“We’ve been in office for about three-quarters of this term and it’s getting worse every day. We have fewer plans and fewer good people, fewer professionals,” he said.

“That’s key to creating projects. We’re not taking advantage of all the potential that a club like Barça has. If we do things right we can take advantage of the potential. We’re asking the president to call elections in the summer of 2025.”

Font also accused Laporta of deceiving fans over Nico Williams. Barcelona chased the Athletic forward over the summer, with Laporta saying publicly they could afford to land the Spain star, but ultimately saw him stay with the Basque club.

“We started by saying that we want him and we ended by saying that we don’t talk about players from other clubs,” he added,

“I knew they were deceiving us. People believe the club’s story, but after promising something X times and not fulfilling it, it will go down like the tale of the shepherd and the sheep.

“There’s no plan. Players are registered via exceptions to the rules. Would Olmo, Iñigo be registered without Araujo, Chirstensen injuries?”

These are certainly strong comments from Font after another chaotic summer in the transfer market for Barcelona. The club did sign Dani Olmo from RB Leipzig, but the new signing had to wait to make his debut as Barca could only register him until the end of the year after Christensen was ruled out for four months.
