Laporta hopeful Xavi will stay at Barcelona – ‘Sometimes decisions are reconsidered’

Barcelona president Joan Laporta has affirmed that the team wants Xavi to continue as the manager, adding that there is a commitment between the parties that everyone will have a final talk at the end of the season.

Xavi’s decision to leave Barcelona at the end of the season was announced during the latter part of January.

The manager admitted during a press conference that he decided to leave Barcelona at the end of the season after feeling the team needed a change of dynamics.

Over the course of the past few weeks, though, it has resurfaced that Barcelona would very much like his continuity and Laporta has affirmed the same.

“I want Xavi to stay. I have already spoken to him and I insist on that. We made a commitment with Xavi that we will talk at the end of the season. Sometimes decisions are reconsidered,” said the president during a chat on the Barça One Podcast.

The president also spoke highly of the manager, pointing out that against Atletico Madrid, the team was without key players such as Pedri, Frenkie de Jong, Joao Cancelo and Andreas Christensen and yet they managed to walk out 3-0 victorious.

“At the Metropolitano, we played without four main players. I can only congratulate Xavi because he makes decisions in this regard that ensure that the team continues to maintain a high competitive level.

“We won three which helped to revive our hopes in the race to win the league,” he added.

Meanwhile, Laporta also shared his thoughts on potential titles that Barcelona can win this season, adding that his side can still defend the La Liga championship. For this, though, he mentioned that winning the upcoming Clasico would be of utmost importance.

“If we want to win La Liga, we must win at the Bernabeu, and after that there will be six matches that will be difficult for them and for us.

“It will depend more on the teams struggling to avoid relegation. The league has not been decided yet and we will fight to achieve it,” he said.

Lastly, he also said that he is very excited to reach the UEFA Champions League final.

“I’m very excited to reach the final and win it. Let’s see if we can beat Paris and then the winner from Atletico-Dortmund,” he remarked.
