Liverpool winger ahead of La Liga speedster on Barcelona’s transfer wishlist

Multiple changes are expected in the Barcelona squad heading into next season, one of which is the left-wing situation.

With Lamine Yamal taking over as the team’s bonafide starting options down the right flank, Barcelona are now looking for a player who can replicate such success on the other extreme in attack.

After all, none of Ferran Torres, Joao Felix or Raphinha proved their worth convincingly last season. Of the three, it was only the Brazilian who laid some sort of claim for a starting spot.

The priority list

As revealed in a recent report from SPORT, Joan Laporta, Deco and Hansi Flick agree that a left-winger is the need of the hour.

Xavi Hernandez, in fact, advocated for the same before his sacking this year and was said to be a staunch admirer of Athletic Club’s Nico Williams.

The situation is now different, for the Spanish phenom is no longer the club’s number one target.

The outlet relays that Liverpool’s Luis Diaz has taken over as Barcelona’s primary transfer target for the summer. Deco is reportedly a strong backer of the Colombian star and has been following him from his days at Porto.

A number of reasons

While Deco does admire the profile of Nico Williams, he sees the youngster’s biggest prowess to be on the break when offered space. At a club like Barcelona where possession and buildup form the philosophy, his attributes may not match with the dynamics.

Furthermore, there is word that the youngster’s release clause is far higher than the €50 million claimed by the media. The overall transaction could cost the club up to €100 million, an investment that is not seen as feasible at the moment.

Diaz’s contract with Liverpool runs until 2027 and will also not be easy to pull off.

The club understand that they will have to make a sacrifice to rope in the Colombian star and are willing to let go of Raphinha for the same.
