Lucy Bronze to leave Barcelona

Barcelona have confirmed defender Lucy Bronze will leave the club following the conclusion of her contract at the end of the month.

The England right-back, 32, joined Barcelona from Manchester City in 2022 and has won two Liga F titles and the Champions League twice during her two seasons with the club.

Her two Champions League successes took her tally of titles in the competition to five, having won the tournament on three occasions with Lyon.

This summer is set to be one of change at Barcelona, with 30-year-old Pere Romeu announced as their new head coach this month following Jonatan Giraldez’s departure to Washington Spirit.

Barcelona have already confirmed the departures of Mariona Caldentey and Sandra Panos ahead of the new season following the conclusion of their contracts, while Nigeria forward Asisat Oshoala moved to Bay FC in February.

Alexia Putellas, Patri Guijarro, Mapi Leon and Marta Torrejon were all set to be out of contract but signed fresh terms last season. The signing of goalkeeper Ellie Roebuck on a free transfer from Manchester City was also confirmed this week.

Bronze made 70 appearances for Barcelona, scoring five goals, and started the Champions League final victories over Wolfsburg in 2023 and Lyon in 2024.

Barcelona already have strength in depth in Bronze’s right-back role, having signed Spain international Ona Batlle from Manchester United last summer.

A Barcelona statement read: “Seven titles out of eight possible. This is the legacy left to FC Barcelona by one of the best defenders in the history of women’s football. The club wishes Lucy Bronze the best of luck and success in her new stage, both personally and professionally.”

Bronze, capped 123 times by England and a multiple Ballon d’Or nominee, had spells with Manchester City, Lyon, Liverpool, Everton and Sunderland before her move to the Catalan club two seasons ago.
