Mikel Merino on Barcelona’s radar ahead of summer transfer window

Real Sociedad midfielder Mikel Merino has reportedly emerged as a target for Barcelona ahead of the summer transfer window.

Diario Sport are reporting that if Barca have room to make signings this summer then Merino is pretty much at the top of the list.

The Catalans think they can land the 27-year-old for transfer for around 25 million euros plus variables. Merino’s contract at La Real runs until 2025 but he is yet to renew.

The midfielder is said to have a new contract offer on the table from the Basque side but does not want to think about his future until after Euro 2024.

However, he is thought to be tempted by the possibility of heading to Barcelona and playing Champions League football next season.

Merino is thought to be a good option for Barca as he can play as a double pivot or as an interior and would be cheaper than Joshua Kimmich or Martin Zubimendi.

The Real Sociedad star also shares an agent with Pau Cubarsi, which may help negotiations, although Barca must first wait to see if they can revert to the 1:1 rule this summer.
