The Pep Guardiola era kicked off at Bayern Munich and Germany won the World Cup in Brazil. As part of 20 years of market values, Transfermarkt looks back at the most valuable players of every season, starting in 2004. This time, two World Cup winners playing for Bayern Munich broke into the most valuable XI.

Once again at the top of the ranking was Lionel Messi, who lost the final in Rio de Janeiro against Germany. His market value throughout the season was at €120m, followed by Cristiano Ronaldo with a market value of €100m. The Portuguese star was directly involved in 68 goals across 47 games—Messi managed 41 goals and 14 assists in 46 games. Ronaldo’s new teammate Gareth Bale, who joined in a deal worth €101m from Tottenham Hotspur, increased his market value to €80m and rounded up the top 3. The Welshman was the first player in history to be transferred for over €100m.

In 2012/13, only Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea spent €100m on new players, in 2013/14 it was eight clubs, including Manchester City and Barcelona. Barca signed Neymar in a deal worth €88m from Santos—PSG invested €136m in new players. The most expensive signing for the Parisians was Edinson Cavani, who joined for €64.5m from Napoli.

World Cup winners Lahm and Neuer represent Germany

Barcelona had the most players in the most valuable XI in 2013/14, with four players, followed by Real Madrid and Bayern Munich, with three players each. Philipp Lahm, David Alaba, and Manuel Neuer represented Bayern, which, under Pep Guardiola, won the Bundesliga title with 90 points. Lahm, as captain, and Neuer, the sweeper-keeper, played a decisive role in Germany winning the World Cup that summer.
