‘Not a pleasant situation’ – Barcelona superstar unhappy with role in national team

Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen has admitted that his situation with the German national team, where he serves as the backup goalkeeper, is not entirely pleasant for him.

Even though Ter Stegen is considered one of the best in Europe, the Barcelona captain has always had to play second fiddle to Manuel Neuer when it comes to the national team.

The 32-year-old shot-stopper did enjoy a brief run as the No. 1 for Die Mannschaft when Neuer was sidelined with a long-term injury last year.

But with the Bayern Munich man back to full fitness, he is again the first-choice stopper heading into the UEFA Euro 2024, that will be played in Germany.

And, Ter Stegen admitted that he is far from pleased with how the current situation is, saying: “It’s not a pleasant situation.”

The German international added that he accepts the decision even though he does not entirely agree with it, before saying:

“At the end of the day, you have a responsibility to the group to help where I can.”

“I told the national coach that one thing is sporting and another is human, I want everyone to be able to trust me,” the goalkeeper remarked.

Ter Stegen also clarified that he has no issues with Neuer, saying: “It has nothing to do with him on a personal level either, we have a good relationship.”

The second captain at Barcelona, Ter Stegen enjoyed another solid season, with the team actually struggling defensively when he was sidelined with a back issue that needed surgery.

For now, though, the 32-year-old will have to make do with a spot on the bench for the Euros in his homeland.
