Official: AC Milan Women to face Barcelona in Joan Gamper Trophy

The Rossonere are ushering in a new era for the team. The first way they’ve done so is by hiring a new coach, and Suzanne Bakker will also immediately have her squad put to the test as they will officially take on the FC Barcelona Women in the Joan Gamper tournament.

The tournament is a friendly competition that will be hosted by Barça at their home stadium in Barcelona. The two teams are coming off starkly contrasting seasons, as, while Milan avoided relegation are in the process of rebuilding, La Blaugranes completed a domestic sweep and also won the Champions League.

Bakker will not be the only coach making her debut during the game, as Barça’s new coach, Pere Romeu, will officially be unveiled by the team. Romeu was appointed as their new coach as their previous coach, Jonatan Giráldez, left the team after accepting a lucrative offer to coach the Washington Spirit.

This is the first time the two women’s teams will be playing against each other. However, Milan and Barça have a long history with one another, which includes Laia Codina being loaned to the team back in 2021. Former men’s captain, Carles Puyol, also confessed his love for Milan and admits that he idolises Paolo Maldini.

Now, the two teams will be cementing this relationship through this tournament. The friendly will be played on August 23rd at the Johan Cruyff at 20:00 CEST. The competition is also being played during the 125th year of Barcelona’s founding, which means that playing this year’s edition of the tournament will be all the more special to the teams.
