Szczesny reveals the Barcelona player who has surprised him the most
Wojciech Szczesny is getting to know his new teammates at FC Barcelona with great speed. The Polish goalkeeper is working hard in training after signing for the Catalans, and at the same time, he is learning about players he had only seen on television.
Having come out of retirement and signed a short-term deal last week, the 34-year-old shot-stopper is confident that he still is at the level where he can make valuable contributions for the Blaugrana.
Szczesny surprised by Pau Cubarsi
Now, speaking in an interview with Mundo Deportivo, Szczesny has named Pau Cubarsi as the Barcelona player who has surprised him the most since his arrival at the club.
Szczesny admitted that he has been amazed by Lamine Yamal and that Raphinha, too, has made an impression on him. The Pole has always been aware of Robert Lewandowski’s quality as well.
But it is Cubarsi who has made the biggest impression on the Barcelona new arrival.
“‘If you watch a game live it’s very different from watching it on TV and then watching it from the stadium you can see the way the players perform. Cubarsi has been the most impressive for me,” said Szczesny.
“After watching him on TV I expected him to be a modern type of defender who is nice on the ball, but softer. When you see him live, he is actually not soft at all and makes very good decisions.”
Hailing the La Masia graduate’s overall game, Szczesny continued: “Of course, he is good on the ball because his technical quality is very high, but his defensive qualities are actually very, very high. I’m looking forward to teaming up with him. I was very impressed.”
Szczesny also highlighted the rest of the Barcelona defenders as well as Yamal as players who have impressed him, saying:
“Also the defenders. No need to talk about Lamine Yamal, but there is no point. I know Yamal but the defence plays very different to what I’m used to, I was very impressed.
“The character and the way they conduct themselves on the field has impressed me a lot. So I’m looking forward to creating a strong and good connection with them.”
