The XIs completed… But who would win?
We have been celebrating Euro 24 and the Copa America by getting fans to use the Official FC Barcelona App to name the best all-time XIs of former Barça players from Europe and the Americas. The result is two extraordinary sets of players, but now it’s time for the final leg. And that is to decide which of the two teams would win in what can sadly only be a hypothetical encounter between these 22 utter legends.
European XI
Goalkeeper: Víctor Valdés
Defenders: Albert Ferrer, Carles Puyol, Gerard Piqué and Jordi Alba
Midfielders: Sergio Busquets, Xavi Hernamdez and Andrés Iniesta
Forwards: Luis Enrique, Thierry Henry and Johan Cruyff
The voting for the forwards has produced the only two non-Spanish players in the European team, Frenchman Thierry Henry and Dutch legend Johan Cruyff, the latter the only player in the squad who played for Barça any earlier than the 1990s. The vast majority of the team pertain to the amazing era in the first two decades of the 21st century in which Barça have enjoyed their greatest success.
The American XI
Goalkeeper: Claudio Bravo
Defenders: Dani Alves, Javier Mascherano, Rafa Márquez and Adriano Correia
Midfielders: Arturo Vidal, Philippe Coutinho and Diego Maradona
Forwards: Leo Messi, Luis Suárez and Ronaldinho
The American team are also predominantly from the 21st century, with the exception of Diego Maradona, who was at Barça in the 1980s. Brazil lead the way with four players, while there are three from Argentina, two from Chile and Rafa Márquez and Luis Suárez flying the flags for Mexico and Uruguay.
