Three key players Barcelona could sacrifice to sign Nico Williams – report

Spain’s forward line in the ongoing European Championships has largely been carried by two young wingers – Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams.

The youngsters share a special bond both on and off the field and are widely regarded as one of the competition’s most effective attacking combinations. Barcelona, unsurprisingly, see it as a no-brainer to link the duo at the club level as well if feasible.

Acquiring the Athletic Club star, however, presents significant challenges, especially given Barcelona’s financial situation.

Substantial sales are necessary to accommodate the Spaniard and the club is willing to take the required steps.

Three players who could be sacrificed

Nico Williams’ release clause at Athletic Club stands at €58 million, and Barcelona must thus part ways with one of the team’s mainstays to fund his arrival.

According to reports from Cadena SER, Laporta has identified three players who can leave the club this transfer window to facilitate the dream transfer – Frenkie de Jong, Raphinha and Ronald Araujo.

The Dutchman’s name on the list is not very surprising considering his history with departure rumours in recent years. Considering the likely shift to a 4-2-3-1 and the possible arrival of a new pivot, De Jong could end up sacrificed.

His departure would open several doors for Barcelona, as the club hope to capitalize on his enormous market value.

Raphinha and Ronald Araujo, meanwhile, both have defined places in the team and have strong cases to stay. However, given the club’s needs, both players have been linked with exits.

Araujo has not yet responded to the contract offer sent by Barcelona and would fetch a large sum if sold, especially with Premier League clubs keen to sign him.

Raphinha’s minutes will see a steep fall should Williams arrive this summer, making him the ideal candidate to be traded in and there is no shortage of interest in him either.
