Three potential captain replacements for Barcelona if Sergi Roberto leaves

Former Barcelona coach Xavi Hernandez had always been a strong advocate for Sergi Roberto, appreciating his versatility, professionalism, and understanding of the club’s playing philosophy.

Xavi’s belief in Roberto’s abilities often saw him entrusted with crucial roles on the pitch and in the dressing room. After all, he was named as the team’s first captain.

However, with Xavi gone, the dynamics at the club could change significantly.

And Sergi Roberto’s continuity is suddenly under doubt, despite previously being close to striking a contract renewal.

While the Catalan veteran may not be the first name on the team sheet, he is still Barça’s captain, and thus the team will need to identify a new successor for the armband.

1. Marc-André ter Stegen

Following Gerard Pique’s mid-season retirement two years ago, Ter Stegen was chosen as Barcelona’s fourth captain.

One of the team’s most seasoned players, the German has been a member of the club since 2014 and continues to have the club’s faith.

Although his level of performance has come into question at times, Ter Stegen’s position at the club is still secure, considering that the Blaugranes are not in pole position to sign a top-level goalkeeper.

As such, Ter Stegen is an obvious pick for the captaincy because of his calm temperament and experience at the club.

2. Ronald Araujo

Ronald Araujo has become a key member of Barcelona’s defense, with outstanding leadership abilities and a dominant presence on the field.

His rise from the club’s B team to a regular first-team starter has been characterized by rapid development and impressive performances.

Most importantly, he always wears his heart on his sleeve and the Uruguayan’s passion for the club is evident.

In fact, Araujo’s demeanor and play style have seen him often draw parallels with one of the club’s greatest captains ever, Carles Puyol.

With Araujo one of Barça’s four captains, he could seamlessly be the first-choice candidate for the armband.

Hansi Flick’s faith in the defender and desire to retain him ahead of next season also strengthens his case.

3. Ilkay Gundogan

Despite only arriving in Barcelona last year, Gundogan is already a vital piece of the Barcelona team.

It may be unconventional to entrust the captain’s armband to a veteran with limited tenure at the club, but Gundogan’s track record speaks for itself.

He has captained some of the most successful teams ever, leading Manchester City to a fabled treble while also being named the German national team’s captain.

In press conferences, the 33-year-old has never shied away from being blunt and honest, which serves as a refreshing change.

Moreover, Barcelona can always count on Gundogan to be the voice on the pitch. Being a midfielder by trade, he has a bird’s eye of the entire game.

Apart from his mature personality, his ability to bring order back into possession renders him an ideal candidate.
