Transfer Rumor: Joshua Kimmich leaving Bayern Munich for Barcelona not likely right now

Former Germany and Bayern Munich manager Hansi Flick is on the verge of officially becoming the new manager of FC Barcelona, replacing the outbound Xavi Hernandez. For a brief period of time, he was linked with possibly making a return to Bayern to replace Thomas Tuchel, as was Julian Nagelsmann, but Flick wanted to experience a new challenge in a different country for the next chapter of his life.

Flick will have a full summer transfer window to help with his squad planning efforts at Barcelona before his first full season in charge of the club, and reports have suggested he is going to be looking towards the Bundesliga for some of his transfer targets. In a market he knows quite well given his time as Bayern’s manager, the German national team manager, and his long tenure as an assistant member of Joachim Löw’s Germany coaching staff.

Naturally, there have been rumors that Flick would like to try to bring Bayern’s Joshua Kimmich to Barcelona, but information from Az’s Maximilian Koch (via @iMiaSanMia) suggests that is not a hot topic at the moment for either club. With the European Championships right around the corner for Germany, that is Kimmich’s full focus at the moment.

Kimmich’s current contract at Bayern is set to expire in June 2025, so it is a crucial period for the player in terms of needing to get his future sorted out, whether that is with Bayern, or elsewhere. So far, there have not been concrete talks yet between the player and the club’s front office, though Max Eberl and Christoph Freund will certainly have to open discussions as soon as they can after the Euros have ended.

Kimmich does not have an agent and currently represents himself, which should help the contract talk process go smoother as it is a more direct line of communication without the presence of an agent or representatives, but only time will how negotiations will go. He will more than likely have conversations with Vincent Kompany about the upcoming season and where he sees Kimmich in his Bayern side as a part of the contract talk process.

The time they are a changin’ at Bayern Munich. Vincent Kompany looks like he is taking over in Bavaria, while the club’s former favorite son — Hansi Flick — is heading to FC Barcelona. Which one will make out better with their new club? We’ll find out, but in the meantime, there could also be some Bayern players who are on Flick’s transfer radar, too. basically, we’ve got a lot to talk about with all of that, plus some appreciation for Bayer Leverkusen’s incredible season.
