Which Women’s Soccer Stars Might Be On The Move

  • Summer 2024 is shaping up to be thrilling with the potential for intriguing transfers.
  • Mary Earps, Delphine Cascarino, Mackenzie Arnold, and Selma Bacha are some of the standout players whose contracts are set to expire in a few weeks.

With the upcoming 2024 Paris Olympics, this summer promises to be thrilling.

Additionally, attention will be on a series of potential transfers that could significantly impact the future of women’s football.

Several major deals are already anticipated to be finalized early on, including World Cup winner Alba Redondo joining Real Madrid, Mariona Caldentey moving to Arsenal, and Ewa Pajor leaning towards a transfer to Barcelona FC.

Other big names in the game, such as Fran Kirby and Vivianne Miedema, are poised to join new clubs.

Mary Earps, Lucy Bronze, and Delphine Cascarino are out of contract, while speculation surrounds players like Aitana Bonmati and Chloe Kelly, among others, as they enter the final year of their respective deals.

And of course, the biggest news so far has been Sam Kerr renewing with Chelsea FC.

With a substantial list of potential transfer news, here’s my selection of some of the names to follow this summer:

Mary Earps

The Lionesses’ star goalkeeper is among several players whose contracts are expiring this summer. Although heavily linked to Arsenal last summer, she remained with Manchester United. However, it appears she is far from renewing her contract.

What are her options? Will she leave her starting position with WSL’s Manchester United to fight for a spot elsewhere?

Time will tell, but this promises to be one of the most intriguing transfer sagas of the summer.

Lucy Bronze

If you need a UEFA Women’s Champions League win, having Lucy Bronze in your squad will surely double your chances. With 5 UWCL trophies in 5 finals, the experienced right-back is one of this summer’s hot topics.

While some rumors suggest she is leaving FC Barcelona, others indicate she might stay. Bronze has previously expressed how comfortable she feels at the club, but a potential salary decrease could be a sticking point.

With rumors of interested clubs in the NWSL and the WSL, Bronze’s summer promises to be long.

Vivianne Miedema

Arguably one of the most high-profile players on the list is Arsenal’s all-time top scorer, Vivianne Miedema. With her contract not renewed by Arsenal, the forward announced her departure, attracting interest from numerous clubs worldwide.

Manchester City appear to be leading the race to sign the 27-year-old Dutch star, but no decision has been made yet as other top clubs consider a move.

Rumors suggest that Olympique Lyonnais is also interested, but with their roster already full of proficient forwards, the French club doesn’t seem to be the favorite in this race.

Selma Bacha

In recent interviews, Lyon’s left-back has not dismissed the possibility of playing abroad one day.

“It’s on my mind. I never close doors. We don’t know what the future holds but yeah, of course I want to play abroad, I don’t think I’ll play all my career in France,” said the French international in an interview with Valyu Media.

With her contract expiring in June 2025, she’s a top priority for Lyon’s management. However, if she is intrigued by a move abroad, they might struggle to convince her to stay.

Where will she go next? Is it the WSL? Or perhaps Spain’s Barcelona?

Aitana Bonmati

Most FC Barcelona fans would likely label this transfer as “impossible.” However, as it stands, Aitana Bonmati’s contract expires in the summer of 2025. If she seeks a new challenge abroad, the club’s management would prefer selling her over losing her for free in a few months.

Barca’s priority is to keep her, and rumors suggest that a new deal is being discussed. So, for now, this remains more of a “what if?” situation.

Delphine Cascarino

When rumors began circulating about Sonia Bompastor’s potential move to WSL’s Chelsea, several names were mentioned as part of the deal with Cascarino topping the list.

However, according to Olympique-et-lyonnais.com, the 27-year-old French winger is expected to extend her contract with her childhood club.

Griedge Mbock is also expected to stay in France.

Chloe Kelly

City’s forward is heading into the final year of her contract. She’s been previously linked to France’s Paris Saint-Germain.

They’re only rumors for the moment but many clubs will definitely be on the lookout if Kelly decides not to renew with the Citizens.

Ella Toone

Having extended her contract with Manchester United until 2026 a few months ago, ‘Tooney’ doesn’t seem to be leaving… but, as reported by the Daily Mail, Barcelona has shown interest in acquiring her talent.

Rosa Kafaji

Regarded as one of the most exciting talents of her generation, Kafaji has garnered the attention of soccer fans with her impressive performances in the 2023/2024 UWCL campaign.

Her contract does not expire before the end of 2024, so she won’t be on the move before January 2025. However, speculation could begin to mount in this summer’s transfer window.

Interest from English, American, Spanish, and French clubs has been reported regarding the 20-year-old midfielder but Hacken is also eager to renew her contract.

And The List Goes On And On…

Other players that might be on the move this summer, or deserve to be followed closely as they might garner attention:

  • Maelle Lakrar
  • Griedge Mbock
