Why Barcelona are ‘convinced’ they can land Nico Williams from Athletic Club this summer

Barcelona are said to be “convinced” they will be able to sign top target Nico Williams from Athletic Club this summer.

The Spain international has emerged as Barcelona’s top summer target and has a release clause worth around €55 million in his contract.

Mundo Deportivo reports Barca are still trying to “do the math” and are waiting to seal a new lucrative kit deal with Nike and a replacement investor for Libero.

A club ‘source’ has told MD that Barca think they can sign Nico if they return to the 1:1 rule and can amortize his contract over six years.

Barcelona need to find around €25-€30m in financial fair play to make it happen and are feeling optimistic as things stand.

Barca also think the fact Williams renewed with a relatively small release clause last year suggests he wasn’t planning on sticking around for long.

Another factor is Nico’s strong relationship with starlet Lamine Yamal. The two have become close and have been thrilling with Spain at Euro 2024.

The report adds that Barca’s only concern is regarding salary. They can offer him a slight increase on his Athletic wage but won’t be able to compete with other clubs.

Chelsea have been linked with Williams, with reports claiming they are willing to triple his salary if he moves to Stamford Bridge.
