Arsenal midfielder Jorginho would be delighted to join Barcelona this summer

Barcelona want to sign Arsenal midfielder Jorginho during the summer transfer window as a free agent, according to Spanish outlet Sport.

The La Liga club are still in a financial mess and are concentrating on landing free agents ahead of the next transfer window.

Jorginho is out of contract at Arsenal at the end of the season, but the Gunners are set to open contract negotiations with him shortly following a string of standout performances.

They want to offer the Italian international a one-year deal and an option of another one-year deal afterwards, but it remains to be seen whether talks have started between both parties.

Barca are monitoring the situation and while they believe he would be delighted to join them, they will not be the only club competing for his services if he becomes a free agent.

Jorginho has established himself as a key player for Arsenal this term, featuring in five of the last six Premier League games and putting in some outstanding performances in the victories over Liverpool and Newcastle United.

The 32-year-old has convinced the Gunners that he deserves an extension, and they cannot afford to lose such a player given his huge quality and experience.

Barca wanted Jorginho in January after Gavi picked up a season-ending knock, and while a move did not materialise, they remain interested in bringing him to the Camp Nou in the summer having lost out on services to Chelsea while he was at Napoli.

Arsenal will need to make a swift move if they want to retain his services beyond this season as Barca will be desperate to convince his representatives.

While they need to bolster their midfield options this summer with the frequent injury problems beleaguering Thomas Partey, they cannot afford to lose Jorginho given what he brings to the table.

The Gunners need to hand him a contract extension as soon as possible and shoo off Barca and other suitors once and for all.
