Newcastle United interested in signing €40 million-rated Barcelona defender this month

It has been a difficult season thus far for Andreas Christensen at Barcelona, as his game-time has taken a hit compared to his debut campaign.

The Danish international has found himself competing with Jules Kounde and Inigo Martinez, in addition to Ronald Araujo, for a starting berth, leading to a slight decline in his prominence.

It has led to speculations that Barça could consider offloading the former Chelsea man in the summer, with several Premier League clubs understood to be his admirers.

Newcastle want Christensen now only

Now, though, as per fresh reports in England, as relayed by Mundo Deportivo, Newcastle United are interested in securing Christensen’s services from Barcelona in the current January transfer window itself.

A recent run of bad results has seen the Magpies drop down to ninth place in the Premier League and manager Eddie Howe is thus seeking reinforcements to improve his defensive unit.

Christensen, thus, has emerged as a leading candidate for Newcastle United, with the club having held an interest in the 27-year-old for quite some time now.

But the report mentions that due to their own Financial Fair Play problems, Newcastle may be unable to shell out a big fee for the defender, whose market value stands at €40 million, and has a contract with Barcelona until 2026.

As such, Newcastle will continue monitoring Christensen and his performances, but it remains to be seen if they do launch a move to sign him now or wait until the summer.
