Barcelona vs Napoli betting preview

Barcelona’s tie with Napoli looks nicely poised ahead of the second leg in Spain on Tuesday, the initial game having been drawn 1-1.

Understandably, Barca are favourites to progress but they have a number of injury issues at the moment and will be well below full strength when they run out at the Estadi Olimpic Lluis Companys on Montjuic – the Nou Camp remans out of action while upgrading work takes place.

That will boost Napoli, although they sit only seventh in Serie A and, coming into this game, the Italians have won just three of their last 10. It is a far cry from the form which swept them to the Serie A title last season.

They are already on their third manager of this campaign, Francesco Calzona having taken the reins just two days prior to the first leg of this tie.

He remains unbeaten but the fact that Napoli have yet to clean sheet under him is a concern heading into this contest where they will face Robert Lewandowski and one of Europe’s bright, young prospects in Lamine Yamal.

Goals may well flow – Barca have lost at home to their La Liga title rivals Real Madrid and Girona this season but have netted in every home game this season.

Napoli boast Victor Osimhen in their line-up and were happy to go toe to toe with Real when the sides met in the group stage. They lost those games 4-2 (in Spain) and 3-2 – don’t be surprised if something similar unfolds here.

Barcelona vs Napoli key stats

  • Barcelona are unbeaten in five previous meetings with Napoli (two wins, three draws). Both teams have scored in all five of those games.
  • When avoiding defeat in a Champions League first-leg tie away from home, Barcelona have progressed 20 times out of 21. Meanwhile, Napoli have been eliminated in all 11 European ties in which they’ve failed to win the first leg at home.
  • Napoli have won five of their last eight Champions League away games but, in all competitions at any venue, are currently on a run of just three wins in 10.
  • Barca striker Robert Lewandowski has scored 12 goals in his last 12 appearances in the Champions League knockout stage.
  • Frenkie de Jong and Pedri have joined an ever-growing Barca injury list. Ronald Araujo will, however, return after suspension. For Napoli, Jens Cajuste and Cyril Ngonge are injury doubts but Amir Rrahmani is fit again.

Barcelona to win and both teams to score

Barca’s injury list is a concern but they should still have enough to see off a team which is out of form and a long way off the level they produced when winning Serie A last season.

Napoli shipped seven goals in two group-stage games against Real Madrid and here they will still come up against players such as Robert Lewandowski, who scored in the first leg.

With Victor Osimhen is their line-up, the visitors do have enough to trouble their opponents though and with Barca having conceded in two of their three group games at their makeshift home on Montjuic, adding both teams to score looks the way to get a decent price.

Lamine Yamal to score or assist

The 16-year-old Barca winger became the youngest player to appear in a Champions League knockout stage game in the first leg and he looks a likely starter here too.

The Spaniard has landed this bet in six of his last 11 appearances and five of his last eight starts.

Yes, Napoli are a better side than many in La Liga but they conceded seven in two games against Real Madrid in the group stage and may struggle to keep the hosts at bay.

Ilkay Gundogan 2+ shots

Gundogan got into some great positions in the first leg, managing four shots in that game and so 6/4 about him adding two more looks a decent play.

A winner of this competition at Manchester City last season, the German will be a key player in this game given the personnel who will be missing and he can take the bull by the horns.

Gundogan also had four shots in Barca’s weekend win over Real Mallorca and has now landed this bet in four of his last eight starts.
