FC Barcelona vs Real Sociedad predictions

There are four rounds of fixtures left to play in La Liga, which is more than in the Premier League, Bundesliga, Serie A and Ligue 1.

Yet compared to other major leagues around Europe, there is relatively little to play for in Spain’s top flight.

Real Madrid were confirmed as the title winners following their victory over Cadiz last weekend. Girona and Barcelona have already qualified for the Champions League, and Atletico Madrid are almost certain to join them in Europe’s premier competition.

At the bottom, Almeria are down and Granada are on the brink of joining them. With a six-point deficit as things stand, Cadiz look set to be relegated too.

The most live issue concerns the battle for Europa League football. Athletic Bilbao have already qualified and they look set to be joined by their Basque rivals, Real Sociedad and Real Betis.

Neither of those clubs are over the line yet, with Valencia and Villarreal still in the mix mathematically. Even here, though, it is hard to see there being too many significant changes in the standings before the end of the season.

A seventh-place finish would be enough for Real Sociedad to reach the Europa League. They sit sixth right now and have a seven-point advantage over Valencia, so a win against Barcelona would put them on the verge of qualifying.

Barcelona’s slim title hopes ended when they lost to Real Madrid in last month’s Clasico. They will be targeting the runners-up spot, which is currently occupied by Girona.

Barcelona are a point behind La Liga’s surprise package going into the weekend, but Girona will extend their advantage (at least temporarily) if they beat Alaves on Friday night.

Xavi Hernandez has already confirmed he will still be in charge of Barcelona next season. His u-turn was not a decision that pleased everyone, so Xavi could do with a strong end to the campaign to bolster his position.

Barcelona vs Real Sociedad betting tips

Both Barcelona and Real Sociedad will be aiming to end the 2023/24 La Liga season on a positive note.

Barcelona to win – 17/20 (10bet)

This has been a disappointing season for Barcelona. Xavi is right when he says the pressure of managing the club can be overwhelming at times, but it is not unreasonable to say that the Blaugrana have fallen short of expectations in 2023/24.

With the finish line in sight, Real Madrid are 14 points clear of their arch-rivals. Barcelona are in danger of dropping out of the top two for only the second time since 2008.

They were knocked out of the Champions League in the quarter-finals and eliminated from the Copa del Rey at the same stage. Barcelona did reach the final of the Supercopa de Espana, only to suffer a 4-1 defeat by Real Madrid in Riyadh.

It would not make amends for their shortcomings, but signing off from the La Liga season by winning their last four games would at least give Barcelona some optimism going into the summer.

Real Sociedad are certainly capable of causing Barca problems, but we like the home team’s chances of edging this one.

Under 2.5 goals – 37/40 (BetVictor)

Barcelona have lost three of their last four games in all competitions and their defence has been a particular weak point.

There have been a total of 22 goals in those matches against Paris Saint-Germain, Real Madrid, Valencia and Girona, 13 of which were scored by the opposition.

For that reason, Xavi will be prioritising a tight backline on Monday. Barcelona are certainly capable of shutting down rival attacks: when they won the title last term, the Blaugrana only conceded 20 goals. Even this season, Barcelona have won six home games 1-0.

Real Sociedad have the third-best defensive record in La Liga, behind only Athletic Club and Real Madrid. But six sides in the division have scored more goals.

Their games this season are averaging 2.44 goals, while each of their last three have contained fewer than 2.5.

Robert Lewandowski to score any time – 6/4 (bet365)

In each of his last 12 full seasons, Robert Lewandowski has scored at least 25 goals in all competitions.

This has not been the best campaign of the legendary striker’s career, but he is now just one strike away from reaching that milestone yet again.

For a while it looked like Lewandowski might fall short. Yet Barcelona’s top scorer notched a hat-trick in the 4-2 victory over Valencia, before scoring once in the loss to Girona.

Lewandowski, now 35 but under contract in Catalonia until 2026, faces an uncertain future.

“We will decide at the end of the season,” Xavi said when asked about the veteran forward’s status beyond this season.

Before then, Lewandowski will look to push towards the 30-goal mark – starting with Monday’s meeting with Real Sociedad.
