Barcelona’s poor results bear heavy on finances amidst economic crisis

Barcelona’s season has fallen off in a span of just four games. While there was indeed only a slim chance in La Liga, they are now guaranteed to go trophyless this campaign.

The Catalans are out of the UEFA Champions League after gifting away a place in the semifinal to Paris Saint-Germain and now sit third in La Liga after last night’s humiliating defeat to Girona.

Financial repercussions

Of the multiple means of generating revenue in football, winning titles is always the sweetest. Good results are always rewarded with apt financial compensation, and the team’s poor run of results this season thus comes as a blow in the financial sense.

For starters, the Blaugrana have not qualified for the massive Club World Cup in 2025 after Atletico Madrid took the second slot from Spain with better results in recent UCL campaigns.

Not only is this poor advertisement for one of the biggest clubs in the world but it also means that Barcelona missed out on €50 million for the same.

The team’s early defeats to Shakhtar Donetsk and Royal Antwerp in the UCL group stages also saw the club lose out on a total of €5.6 million and the recent blow in La Liga could add to the devastation.

Should Barcelona fail to finish second on the league standings and thus miss out on the Spanish Super Cup next year, they will lose out on a further €6-8 million.

The loss from television rights between the second and third teams, further, could add a possible loss of €1-2 million.

Crucial summer ahead

Joan Laporta, Deco and Xavi have a massive task on their hands for June when the club will look to make massive signings to elevate the quality of the squad.

Neck deep in a financial crisis already, however, it will not be easy for the management to fund arrivals without big sales.

In a situation where every dime entering the club’s coffers is worth its weight in gold, the sum forfeited through poor results is simply astronomical.
